Key ideas for both sides
White
- After ...d5 exd5 cxd5, retreat Bb3 and keep the bishop on the a2-g8 diagonal against d5.
- Play d4, Nf3 and Bf4 next, developing quickly and holding the e5 square in the center.
- Against ...e6, Bb3, Nc3 and e5 can gain space for a French-like structure.
Black
- Play 2...d5, hitting the e4 pawn and opening the c8 bishop, and gain time on the c4 bishop.
- After exd5 cxd5 and Bb3, develop with ...Bf5, ...e6 and ...Nc6, aiming at the center.
- Use ...Nf6 and ...Bd6 to build a solid position with good piece play.
- The ...e6 plan with ...d5 next also works, keeping the bishop on b3 blocked.
Plans and pawn structure
White's bishop is exposed on c4. After ...d5 Black gains time and gets a central pawn, while White's bishop goes to b3 and faces the solid d5 pawn. Black develops ...Bf5, ...e6, ...Nc6 and ...Nf6, and has a comfortable center. White aims for d4, Nf3, Bf4 and O-O, and later hopes to pressure d5 with c4. If Black's center holds, the b3 bishop stays a spectator.
