Key ideas for both sides
White
- Meet 3...Bg4 with h3, forcing the bishop to take on f3 or retreat, and keep the bishop pair.
- After 3...dxe4 Nxe4 Nf6, play Qe2. If Black answers ...Nbd7, the knight jump Nd6 is mate.
- Against 3...g6 grab the center with d4 and develop Bd3, as the third engine line shows.
- Use the Qf3 recapture to pressure d5 and f7, then castle short behind Be2.
Black
- Pin with 3...Bg4, the engine's first choice, then take on f3 and play ...Nf6, ...e6 and ...dxe4.
- After 3...dxe4 Nxe4 Nf6 Qe2, trade knights with ...Nxe4 first, then develop ...Nd7 safely.
- A fianchetto with ...g6 and ...Bg7 is playable, but it allows d4 and a broad white center.
- Do not leave the d5 pawn hanging to Qf3 pressure: support it with ...e6 or release it with ...dxe4.
Plans and pawn structure
This line is about flexibility. After ...Bg4 and h3 Bxf3, White holds the bishop pair and wants to open the game with d4 or Be2 and a later f4, while Black builds a light-square shell with ...e6 and ...Nf6 and trades on e4 at the right moment. After ...dxe4, the game opens early and the queen on e2 brings both tactics on the e-file and a quick Bc4 setup. Against ...g6, White takes the center with d4 and plays a Gurgenidze-like position with an extra developed knight.

How to play against it
As Black, the ...Bg4 pin is the most reliable route to an equal game. In the ...dxe4 lines, always check Nd6 tricks while the e-file is pinned by a queen on e2. As White, do not rush d4 if ...Bg4 can pin the f3 knight against it; h3 first is cleaner.
