Key ideas for both sides
White
- Set up with Bd3, c3 and Nf3, then Bf4 to control e5. This is the slow Exchange structure.
- Use Qb3 to hit b7 when Black's light bishop leaves c8, forcing a decision on the queenside.
- The sharper c4 push, met by ...Nf6 and ...e6, leads to the Panov Attack and isolated-pawn positions.
Black
- Recapture 3...cxd5. Taking with the queen allows c4 and Nc3 with tempo, the reason for the engine's edge.
- Develop with ...Nc6, ...Nf6 and ...Bg4 before White can play h3 and Bf4 comfortably.
- Later use the c-file for the rooks and a queenside minority push with ...b5 and ...b4.
Plans and pawn structure
After ...cxd5 the pawns sit on d4 and d5, with White's c-pawn and Black's e-pawn left. White has the half-open e-file and Black the half-open c-file. White often plays c3, Bd3, Bf4, Nf3 and Qb3 or Qc2, aiming at h7 and the e5 outpost. Black answers with ...Nc6, ...Nf6, ...Bg4 or ...Bf5, ...e6 and a queenside minority attack with ...b5-b4 to break up the c3 pawn.

How to play against it
As Black, take back with the c-pawn. If you recapture with the queen, c4 and Nc3 gain time and White gets a lasting edge. Develop the light bishop before ...e6. As White, choose your style: slow c3 setups for safety or 4.c4 for sharper play.
