Key ideas for both sides
White
- Play 4.h3, the top engine move, and after ...Bxf3 consider gxf3 to keep the queen home and control e4 and g4.
- After gxf3, push d4 and put the queen on d3, using the open g-file for a rook later.
- The calm 4.Be2 with d4 and h3 next keeps a normal structure and a bishop pair after Bxf3.
Black
- Take on f3 when h3 asks, then follow with ...e6 and ...Nf6 on a light-square chain with no holes.
- Hit back in the center with ...c5 after White's d4, as the first engine line shows.
- Use ...Bb4 to pin the c3 knight and fight for e4 once the bishop on f8 has a path.
- Play ...Nd7 and ...Ngf6 to cover e5 and keep White's bishops quiet.
Plans and pawn structure
Black gives up the light bishop and puts pawns on c6, d5 and e6, so Black's position is hard to break but a bit passive on the dark squares. White has two bishops and wants to open the game with d4, exd5 and Qd3 or a later f4. If White recaptures gxf3, the g-file opens and White's king often stays in the center or goes long. Black counters with ...c5, ...Nc6 and pressure on d4, or with ...Bb4 against c3 to control e4.

How to play against it
As White, ask the question with h3 and decide on the recapture by taste: Qxf3 is simple, gxf3 is more ambitious. As Black, take on f3 without delay when asked, then strike with ...c5 or ...Bb4 so the bishop pair does not dominate.
