Dutch Defense: Stonewall Variation

The Stonewall Dutch is Black's wall of pawns on d5, e6 and f5, completed here with 6...d5 against White's fianchetto setup. Black wants a knight on e4 and kingside play, while White wants to trade off Black's good bishop and use the hole on e5.

Key ideas for both sides

White

  • Bf4 offers to trade the dark-squared bishops. Without that piece Black cannot cover e5, the square in front of the backward e6 pawn.
  • Qc2 and Nc3 control e4. The top engine line plays both before deciding where the c1-bishop goes.
  • Put a knight on e5. Ne1 and Nd3 is one route that also supports the f4 square.
  • The e4 break, prepared by Nd2 or Ne1 and then f3, opens the center against the f5 and e6 pawns.

Black

  • Settle a knight on e4 with ...Ne4. It is hard to remove because White has no pawn that attacks it easily.
  • Play ...c6 and ...Nd7 to complete the wall and add support to e5 and the e4 knight.
  • Kingside space with ...g5 can drive away a bishop from f4, as the engine lines show.
  • Solve the c8-bishop with ...Bd7 and ...Be8, heading for h5, or with ...b6 and a queenside fianchetto.

Plans and pawn structure

The pawn chain fixes the plans. Black's dark squares, e5 above all, are the long-term weak spots, so White aims for a dark-squared bishop trade with Bf4 or b3 and a bishop on a3, then a knight on e5. Black answers with a knight on e4, ...c6, ...Nd7, and a kingside build-up with ...Qe8, ...Qh5 or ...g5. The light bishop on c8 is Black's problem piece; freeing it decides many games. If White gets e4 in under good conditions, the center opens and Black's pawns become targets.

Where the engine's main line heads: Black Stonewall: pawns d5, e6, f5. Black's Stonewall: pawns on d5, e6 and f5. A knight lands on e4; the e5 square and the dark-squared bishop are the long-term worries.

Where it goes next

How to play against it

As White, do not allow a free knight on e4 and a calm kingside attack. Play Qc2, Nc3 and Bf4 to fight for e4 and swap dark bishops. Avoid rushing cxd5, since the e6 pawn recaptures and frees the c8-bishop. As Black, never let White trade your e7-bishop for nothing; keep it to guard e5.
