Key ideas for both sides

White

  • After ...d5 cxd5 Nxd5, play Bg2 at once so the bishop hits the d5 knight and the b7 pawn.
  • Use d3 and Be3 against a Black setup with ...Nc7 and ...e5, targeting the c5 pawn.
  • Against ...e6 and ...d5, push d4 to give Black an isolated pawn on d5 after exchanges.

Black

  • Go for ...d5, then retreat the knight to c7 and play ...e5 for a Rubinstein-style central grip.
  • Develop ...Nc6 and ...e6, then ...d5, aiming for a Tarrasch-type pawn structure.
  • Keep the c5 pawn as a guard on d4 so that White's central breaks cost time.

Plans and pawn structure

The early g3 tells Black the bishop will come to g2, so Black has to decide how to meet it. With ...d5 and ...Nc7, Black sets up a bind with c5 and e5, and White aims at the c5 pawn and d4 square. With ...e6 and ...d5, White plays cxd5 and d4 to create an isolated pawn structure in which the g2 bishop is strong. Either way, the center is the main battleground.

How to play against it

For Black: play ...d5 or ...Nc6 with ...e6, rather than slow moves. After cxd5 Nxd5, retreat the knight to c7 so it is not exposed on the long diagonal. Avoid leaving b7 undefended while the g2 bishop is aiming at it.
