Key ideas for both sides
White
- Against ...g6, play e3 and d4, so that ...cxd4 exd4 leaves White a strong center and a d5 push.
- Against ...Nf6 or ...Nc6, use Nf3 and g3, then strike with d4 to open the long diagonal.
- Keep d5 under control with the c4 pawn and c3 knight, limiting Black's ...d5 break.
Black
- Fianchetto with ...g6 and ...Bg7, pressing on d4 and the long dark diagonal.
- Develop ...Nc6 and ...Nf6, then meet White's d4 with ...cxd4 and active piece play.
- Prepare ...d5 with ...e6 so that the c3 knight and c4 pawn lose their grip on d5.
Plans and pawn structure
With the c3 knight out, White keeps both plans available: a central pawn duo after e3 and d4, or a fianchetto with Nf3 and g3. Against the Black fianchetto, the d4 and d5 pushes can cramp the g7 bishop. Against knight setups, White's d4 often leads to an open position where Nxd4 centralizes. Black's goal in every line is a timely ...d5 or ...cxd4 to free the game.

How to play against it
For Black: pick a setup and stick with it. ...g6 and ...Bg7 is solid, but watch for e3 and d4 cramping the bishop. ...Nc6 and ...Nf6 are flexible and lead to the main lines. Avoid early ...e5 without development, which weakens d5 for the c3 knight.
