Key ideas for both sides
White
- 6.Be2 is the engine's choice; after 6...cxd4 7.cxd4 the c3 square is free for the knight.
- Against ...Bb5, trade with Bxb5+ and don't lose time avoiding the swap.
- 6.a3 a5 7.a4 stops ...Bb5 directly, since the a4 pawn guards b5, though it costs time.
Black
- ...Bb5 is the point: it trades Black's French bishop for White's good one.
- Develop the knights with ...Ne7 and ...Nbc6, keeping f5 for the e7-knight.
- With the queen already on b6, ...cxd4 ties White to d4 and b2 and slows White's development.
Plans and pawn structure
The pawn chain is the usual French one, and Black's queen on b6 hits d4 and b2 early. White must either allow the bishop swap on b5 or spend moves stopping it with a4. After the swap, Black has fewer light-square worries and plays ...Nf5 and ...Nc6 against d4. White relies on Nc3, castling and a kingside push like g4 to kick the f5-knight.
Where the engine's main line heads: French chain: d4–e5 against d5–e6. The French chain: White's pawns on d4 and e5 face Black's on d5 and e6. White has kingside space, Black attacks the base of the chain.

How to play against it
Play 6.Be2 and recapture on d4 with the pawn, then put the knight on c3. If you want to stop the bishop trade, 6.a3 and a4 do it but cost time. Keep the c1-bishop at home until b2 is safe, since the queen on b6 is watching it.
