The Chigorin Variation is 2.Qe2 against the French, defending e4 with the queen so that ...d5 can be met by exd5 and pressure on the e-file. White aims for d3, Nf3, g3 and Bg2, while Black chooses between ...c5, ...Nc6 with ...e5, or ...Be7 and ...d5.

Key ideas for both sides

White

  • Build a closed setup with Nf3, d3, g3 and Bg2, keeping e4 solid and the king safe after O-O.
  • If Black plays ...d5 too early, exd5 opens the e-file where the queen already stands, and ...exd5 walks into a check.
  • Against 2...c5, the engine follows with Nf3, d3 and even h4 for kingside space.

Black

  • 2...c5 and ...Nc6 take d4 away, and ...g6 with ...Bg7 adds pressure on the long diagonal.
  • 2...Nc6 3.Nf3 e5 switches to an open game where White's queen on e2 blocks the f1-bishop.
  • ...d5 is fine after ...Be7 or ...Nc6 has prepared it, because the e-file check is then no longer an issue.

Plans and pawn structure

The queen on e2 makes this a slow, closed game, often like a reversed King's Indian with White's g3 and Bg2. White's plan is d3, Nf3, g3, Bg2, O-O and later f4 or e5 for kingside space. Black plays in the center and on the queenside with ...c5, ...Nc6, ...g6 and ...b5. The fight is about who gets a useful pawn break in first.

How to play against it

Don't hurry with ...d5 while ...exd5 would allow a check on the e-file. Play 2...c5 and ...Nc6, or 2...Be7 first, then challenge the center. Keep in mind that White's queen blocks the f1-bishop until g3 or d3 is played, so White develops slowly and you have time.
