Key ideas for both sides
White
- 4.e5 kicks the knight to d7, then 5.f4 and Nf3 build a broad chain with kingside space.
- 4.Bg5 pins the knight; after 4...dxe4 5.Nxe4, White gets free development and Nxf6+ trades off a kingside defender.
- 4.exd5 exd5 leads to a symmetrical structure with quick development and few risks for either side.
Black
- After 4.e5 Nfd7, hit the chain base with 5...c5, then ...Nc6 and ...Qb6 against d4.
- Against 4.Bg5, 4...dxe4 and ...Nbd7 let Black recapture on f6 with a knight, keeping the pawns healthy.
- ...Be7 breaks the pin calmly, and ...Bb4 is another way to pin the c3-knight.
Plans and pawn structure
After 4.e5 the game is a French chain fight: White's f4 and Nf3 support e5 and prepare kingside play, while Black attacks d4 with ...c5, ...Nc6 and ...Qb6, and later hits e5 with ...f6. After 4.Bg5 dxe4 the center opens, Black has a solid but passive position, and the fight is about the ...c5 or ...e5 break. In the exchange line, both sides develop quickly and the open e-file decides a lot.
Where the engine's main line heads: French chain: d4–e5 against d5–e6. The French chain: White's pawns on d4 and e5 face Black's on d5 and e6. White has kingside space, Black attacks the base of the chain.

4.e5 is the most ambitious: follow with f4 and Nf3 and be ready for ...c5. 4.Bg5 is a solid, well-tested choice. Avoid 4.exd5 if you want to play for a win, since it gives Black an easy symmetrical game with free development for both bishops.
