Key ideas for both sides

White

  • 5.e5 is the engine's choice: after ...h6 retreat Bd2 and recapture on c3 with the b-pawn.
  • Then Qg4 hits g7 and the knight on e4, forcing ...g6 and weakening Black's dark squares.
  • The doubled c-pawns come with the bishop pair; use Bd3 and h4 to attack on the kingside.
  • 5.exd5 and 5.Ne2 are calmer and roughly level; they avoid the most forcing theory.

Black

  • After 5.e5, kick the g5 bishop with ...h6 before White can keep the pin.
  • Trade with ...Bxc3 and jump ...Ne4, hitting the d2 bishop and the c3 pawn.
  • Cover g7 with ...g6 when the queen comes to g4, and keep ...Kf8 in mind.
  • Hit the doubled pawns with ...c5 and ...Nc6 to pressure c3 and d4.

Plans and pawn structure

After 5.e5 h6 6.Bd2 Bxc3 7.bxc3 Ne4 the position is double-edged. White has doubled c-pawns but the bishop pair and kingside space, so the plan is Qg4, Bd3 and an attack on Black's weakened kingside. Black's knight on e4 is strong, and ...c5 with ...Nc6 attacks the weak c3 and d4 pawns. Black's king often stays in the center or goes to f8, so both sides must calculate.

Where the engine's main line heads: White has doubled c-pawns. White's c-pawns are doubled, usually after ...Bxc3 bxc3. In return White keeps the bishop pair and a solid center.

Where it goes next

How to play against it

As White, push 5.e5 and meet ...h6 with 6.Bd2. After the trade on c3 and ...Ne4, play Qg4 to force ...g6. Do not take on f6 with the e-pawn unless you have checked the tactics. If you want a quieter game, 5.exd5 is fine.
