Key ideas for both sides
White
- 4.Nxe4 is the only good move. 4.a3 and 4.Nge2 are gambits that leave White worse.
- Develop with Nf3, Bd3 and Qe2, and consider long castling for a kingside attack.
- Trade on f6 when Black challenges e4, then use c3 and a6-free squares to keep d4 protected.
- Put a knight on e5 when possible; it is a strong outpost without Black's d-pawn.
Black
- Play ...Nd7 and ...Ngf6 to trade a pair of knights without doubled pawns.
- The ...c5 break hits d4 and frees the queenside pieces once Black has castled.
- Develop the c8 bishop with ...b6 and a fianchetto on b7, or via d7 to c6 against the e4 knight.
- Castle short and keep the position closed until White's attack is defused.
Plans and pawn structure
Black has given up the center for a compact structure: pawns on e6 against d4, with White having more space. White develops quickly, often castles long and attacks on the kingside or uses the e5 square. Black wants exchanges, especially of the e4 knight, and then ...c5 or ...e5 to free the game. The c8 bishop is Black's key piece; once it is active, Black is close to equal.
Where the engine's main line heads: White pawn d4, no e-pawns for White, no d-pawn for Black. White has a pawn on d4 and no e-pawn; Black has no d-pawn. White has more central space; Black's pieces are free and the d4 pawn is a target.

How to play against it
As White, take back with 4.Nxe4 and develop. Do not try 4.a3 or 4.Nge2, which give Black the extra pawn and a good game. Aim for Bd3, Nf3, Qe2 and long castling, and keep the e5 square for a knight.
