French Defense: St. George Defense

The St. George Defense is 1.e4 e6 2.d4 a6, a waiting move that prepares ...b5 instead of challenging the center with ...d5 at once. Black hopes to gain queenside space and fianchetto the light bishop, while White simply develops and keeps the big center.

Key ideas for both sides

White

  • Develop with 3.Bd3 or 3.Nc3 as in the engine lines. Your e4 and d4 pawns already give you more space.
  • Answer ...d5 with Nc3 and keep tension; if Black plays ...c5, the trade dxc5 opens lines for your faster development.
  • The rare c4 push takes b5 away early and meets ...b5 with a fight for the light squares.
  • Keep an eye on e5: a well-timed e5 push cramps a Black king's knight that has no good square.

Black

  • The point of ...a6 is ...b5, gaining queenside space and preparing the light-squared bishop on the long diagonal.
  • Do not forget the center. The engine answers 3.Bd3 with 3...d5, turning the game into a French with an extra ...a6.
  • After ...d5 and ...c5, recapture on c5 with the bishop and aim it at f2.
  • Avoid too many pawn moves in a row while White's pieces come out fast.

Plans and pawn structure

If Black plays ...d5 soon, the game looks like a French where ...a6 is a useful but slow extra move. In the engine lines White meets ...c5 with dxc5 and exd5, so Black ends up with an isolated d-pawn but active bishops. If Black instead goes for ...b5 and a fianchetto, White grabs space with e5 or c4 and develops quickly. White's plan is simple: Bd3, Nc3 or Nf3, castle short and use the extra space.

How to play against it

As White, do not try to punish ...a6 directly. Play 3.Bd3 or 3.Nc3, castle, and keep the e4 and d4 pawns. If Black wastes more time with queenside pawns, push e5 and attack. If Black plays ...d5, treat it as a normal French with a small lead in time.
