Key ideas for both sides

White

  • Play 6.Ne2 and follow with c3, as the engine does, so d4 is backed by a pawn when ...c5 arrives.
  • Use a3 to stop ...Bb4 and ...Qa5 ideas from becoming annoying after the c-file opens.
  • Developing the dark bishop with Bg5 or Bf4 is a sharper option that trades Black's good bishop.
  • Keep the e5 pawn. It takes f6 away from Black's knights and cramps the kingside.

Black

  • Strike with ...c5 at once and add ...Nc6 to put pressure on d4.
  • The pawn on a6 supports ...b5, so you can gain queenside space before White castles.
  • After the trade on d4, ...Qa5+ checks the king and can pin pieces on the a5-e1 diagonal.
  • Consider ...f6 later to challenge e5 once your pieces are ready.

Plans and pawn structure

The position is the closed French chain: White pawns on d4 and e5 against Black pawns on d5 and e6. White's main plan is Ne2 and c3 to keep d4, then play on the kingside. Black's plan is ...c5, ...Nc6 and a queenside pawn storm with ...b5, which the ...a6 move already supports. After the trade on d4, the c-file opens and Black's queen and rooks aim at White's king if it stays in the center.

Where it goes next

How to play against it

As White, do not let d4 fall. Play 6.Ne2 and c3, and use a3 to slow Black's queenside play. Avoid an early Bd3 that allows ...c5 and pressure on d4 before you have c3 in.
