Key ideas for both sides
White
- Take with 4.cxd5 and, after 4...Bg7, check with 5.Qa4+ to force ...c6 and grab the pawn on c6.
- The quiet e3 plan keeps d4 solid, then cxd5 and e4 drive the d5 knight back to b6, where a4 and a5 harass it.
- With Nc3, cxd5 and e4 you reach a big center after ...Nxc3 bxc3, but you must watch ...c5 hitting d4.
Black
- Finish with ...Bg7 and ...O-O; the g7 bishop is both the main guard of your king and the main attacker of d4.
- After 5.Qa4+ block with ...c6 and recapture ...Nxc6, trading a pawn for fast development and open lines on the queenside.
- When White builds pawns on d4 and e4, hit them with ...c5 and ...Nc6, as in the third engine line.
- Recapturing with the knight on d5 is natural, but expect e4 to kick it, so know whether it goes to b6 or trades on c3.
Plans and pawn structure
Without a white knight on c3 yet, White cannot gain time on a d5 knight as easily, so move four sets the tone. After cxd5 and Qa4+, Black often sits a pawn down but leads in development, with the c6 knight and g7 bishop aiming at d4 and the queenside. If White builds the e4 center instead, Black follows the classic Grünfeld recipe: trade on c3, then ...c5 and ...Nc6 against d4. White wants to keep that center intact, castle short and use central space.

How to play against it
As White, take with 4.cxd5 and, after ...Bg7, check with Qa4 to collect the c6 pawn. Do not grab and then fall behind: play Nc3 and castle before chasing more material. If you prefer a quiet game, e3 keeps d4 covered and avoids the sharpest lines.
