Key ideas for both sides
White
- Answer ...h6 with Bxf6 and, after ...Qxf6, jump in with Nd5 so the queen must step back.
- Play c3 and b4 to kick the c5 bishop and gain queenside space with tempo.
- Keep the king in the center for a while: queenside castling and kingside pawn storms are possible here.
- If Black plays ...Bb4, reply Nd2 to protect e4 and accept doubled c-pawns after a trade on c3.
Black
- Play 6...h6 at once, and after Bxf6 recapture with the queen to keep the kingside pawns intact.
- Use ...Na5 to trade the c4 bishop for a knight and win the bishop pair.
- Retreat ...Qd8 when Nd5 arrives, and only then play ...c6 to kick the knight away.
- Do not castle short while Bg5 pins and Nd5 can come: Bxf6 then wrecks the king's cover.
Plans and pawn structure
The pin on f6 defines this line. If the bishop takes on f6, Black gets the bishop pair and White gets a strong knight on d5 and quick queenside play with c3 and b4. Black's dark-squared bishop can be hunted, so ...Na5 or ...a6 often prepares a retreat. Castling choices matter: Black usually waits until the pin is gone, and White may delay castling to keep kingside pawn pushes open.
Where the engine's main line heads: Quiet center: c3–d3–e4 against e5. A slow center: White has c3, d3 and e4 against e5. Nobody is in a hurry, and the d3–d4 break decides when the game opens.
