Key ideas for both sides

White

  • Develop with 5.Nc3 so the e4 pawn is protected and the knight can land on d5 later.
  • Use Ng5 to hit the e6 and f7 squares, which ...f5 has left without pawn cover.
  • If Black plays ...d5, take with the knight on d5 and keep the c4 bishop aimed at g8.
  • Castle short and keep calm: the extra space and the open diagonal are worth more than pawn grabbing.

Black

  • Develop with ...Nf6 right after ...f5 so e4 stays under pressure from two pieces.
  • Use ...h6 to drive a knight from g5 back to f3 before playing ...fxe4.
  • Consider ...f4 to grab kingside space if White plays slowly with a3.
  • Keep the king in mind: castling short puts it on the diagonal of the c4 bishop.

Plans and pawn structure

Black's ...f5 opens lines, but the open a2 to g8 diagonal and the weak e6 square favor White. White develops Nc3 and Ng5, and if Black plays ...d5 the knight captures on d5. Black wants ...Nf6, ...fxe4 and pressure on the half-open f-file with rooks. If White trades on f6 with Bg5 and Bxf6 the black king loses a defender. The game is sharp, but White's pieces get there first.

Where it goes next

How to play against it

As White, play 5.Nc3 and do not take on f5 in a hurry. Answer ...Nf6 with Ng5, aiming at f7 and e6. If Black pushes ...d5, capture with the knight on d5 and keep your bishop aimed at g8. Castle soon and the opening problems are Black's.
