Key ideas for both sides

White

  • Play Bb2 next to hit e5 along the long diagonal, as in all three engine lines.
  • Add e3 and c4 to fight for d5, and consider c5 to gain queenside space.
  • Because a3 already protects b4, ...a5 can be met calmly with b5 instead of a trade.
  • Develop the king's bishop to e2 and the knight to f3 only after the center is settled.

Black

  • Take the center with 2...d5, the engine's top choice, and back e5 with ...Nd7 and ...Ngf6.
  • Strike at b4 with ...a5 to open the a-file and make the a3 pawn a target.
  • The push ...e4 gains space and blunts White's b2 bishop once ...d5 supports it.
  • Develop the f8 bishop to d6 or e7 behind the pawns rather than chasing b4.

Plans and pawn structure

White spent a tempo on a3, so Black gets a free hand in the center. Black builds with ...d5, ...Nd7 and ...Ngf6, keeping e5 solid against the b2 bishop, and can push ...e4 to gain more space. White aims for e3, c4 and sometimes c5, playing on the queenside where the b4 and a3 pawns help. The fight often turns on whether Black's center becomes a strength or a target for c4 and d3.

How to play against it

As Black, play 2...d5 and develop behind your pawns with ...Nd7, ...Ngf6 and ...Bd6. Use ...a5 to question the b4 pawn. Avoid overextending with ...e4 before your pieces are ready, because d3 can then hit the pawn chain. White's slow a3 is your reason to grab space now.
