Key ideas for both sides

White

  • Play 3.c4, the engine's first choice, then e3 and Nc3 for control of d5.
  • Keep a3 in reserve to support b4 if Black starts ...a5 against the queenside.
  • The b2 bishop presses e5; a later f4 can add a second attacker against the pawn.
  • Develop the king's bishop to e2 and castle short before opening the center.

Black

  • Develop with ...Nf6, ...Be7 and ...O-O, keeping the e5 pawn firmly protected by ...d6.
  • Use ...c6 to prepare ...d5 later, taking the d5 square away from White's knight.
  • Strike at b4 with ...a5 once White has played c4, opening the a-file.
  • A kingside fianchetto with ...g6 and ...Bg7 is another way to blunt the b2 bishop.

Plans and pawn structure

Black's ...d6 shuts the f8 bishop's diagonal to b4, so the b4 pawn is safe for now and the game becomes a slow maneuvering fight. White plays on the queenside and in the center with c4, e3, Nc3 and a3, using b4 and b5 for space. Black keeps a sturdy e5 and looks for ...c6 and ...d5, or ...a5 to loosen White's queenside pawns. The position resembles a reversed English with an extra pawn move for White on the b-file.

How to play against it

As White, play 3.c4 and follow with e3, Nc3 and a3. Do not rush to win the e5 pawn; it is well defended. Keep your queenside pawns compact so ...a5 does not create a weakness on b4. Your edge comes from space, not tactics, so improve pieces before opening lines.
