Key ideas for both sides
White
- Take with Nxd4 and after ...exd4, castle and retreat the bishop to c4 when ...c6 hits it.
- Play d3 and later c3 to challenge the d4 pawn and open lines for the pieces.
- Consider f4 to use the kingside majority once Black's pieces are passive.
Black
- Hit the bishop with ...c6 at once, then develop with ...Nf6 and ...d6.
- Keep the d4 pawn supported; ...c5 can follow to build a firm wedge on the queenside.
- Develop the dark bishop to e7 or c5 and castle quickly to keep the king safe.
Plans and pawn structure
After the knight trade, the d4 pawn defines the game. Black likes it because it cramps White's c3 knight and cuts the board. White wants c3 to dissolve it or a kingside push with f4 to make the extra kingside pawn count. Black plays ...c6, ...Nf6, ...d6 and ...Be7, then castles. White's lead in development gives the better chances if the center opens.
