Key ideas for both sides
White
- Play c3 first, as in the top engine line, then d4 to gain time against the c5 bishop.
- Know the fork trick: Nxe5 and then d4 can win back material by hitting c5 and e5 together.
- Castling first with c3 and d4 next is a calm alternative; Bxc6 and d4 can also gain the bishop pair.
Black
- Develop with ...Nge7 or ...Nf6 and castle quickly, keeping the bishop on c5 or b6.
- Strike with ...d5 when White's knight goes to e5, as in the main engine line.
- Retreat the bishop to b6 in time so d4 does not win a tempo.
Plans and pawn structure
White aims for c3 and d4, gaining central space and forcing the bishop to b6. Black castles and uses ...d6 or ...d5 to fight the center. The c5 bishop pins f2 at times, so White must be careful with early Nxe5 tricks that open the a7-g1 diagonal. In the long run, White's d4 center and the Spanish bishop create pressure, while Black hopes for active pieces and the ...d5 break.
