Key ideas for both sides

White

  • Answer ...O-O with d4, then Bg5 to pin the f6 knight, as in the main engine line.
  • If Black grabs e4, play Qe2 to hit the knight and open the e-file against the black king.
  • Use a4 against a bishop on b6 to gain queenside space and trap ideas.

Black

  • Castle and play ...Bb6, keeping the bishop safe from d4 and aimed at f2.
  • Taking with ...Nxe4 is risky: after Qe2, Black's king sits on an open e-file.
  • Use ...d6 and ...a5 to hold e5 and stop White's a4 and a5 expansion on the queenside.

Plans and pawn structure

If Black castles, White plays d4 and Bg5, and the center becomes tense with pawns on d4 and e4 against e5. Black holds with ...d6 and ...a5, then looks for ...Bg4 or ...h6. If Black takes on e4, the game becomes sharp: Qe2 pins along the e-file, and Black needs ...d5 to protect the knight while White plays c4 to break. White's lead in development often matters more than the pawn.

Where the engine's main line heads: Central tension: d4 and e4 against e5. Central tension: d4 and e4 against e5. One capture changes the character of the game.

Where it goes next

How to play against it

As Black, castle and play ...Bb6 instead of grabbing e4. The pawn grab gives White a dangerous attack after Qe2, with your king stuck on the e-file and ...Bxf2 only creating more open lines. As White, push d4 quickly and use Bg5 and a4 to keep the initiative.
