Key ideas for both sides

White

  • Castle with 4.O-O and play Re1 and d4, as in the top engine line.
  • Use 4.Nc3 and later Nd5 to hit the queen on e7 and gain time.
  • Keep the pin on c6 and wait for ...a6, then retreat the bishop to a4.
  • Open lines in the center while the black king is still uncastled.
