Key ideas for both sides
White
- Recapture with Nxd4 and develop Nc3; against ...e5, jump to b5 with Ndb5 and play Bg5 to fight for d5.
- If Black plays 3...Nxd4, take back twice and centralize the queen on d4 with a clear lead in development.
- Against the slow 3...d6, push d5 to cramp Black and gain time on the c6 knight.
Black
- Play 3...cxd4 at once; it is the only move that keeps the position balanced.
- After Nxd4, ...Nf6 and ...e5 drive the knight away and fight for d4, accepting a hole on d5.
- Choose ...g6 for the Accelerated Dragon or ...e6 for a flexible setup if you prefer to avoid ...e5 structures.
Plans and pawn structure
After 3...cxd4 4.Nxd4 the classic Open Sicilian structure appears: White has the e-pawn and more central space, Black has the half-open c-file and an extra central pawn. With ...Nf6 and ...e5, Black forces the d4 knight to move and often sees it land on b5, with d6 under pressure. White then plays Bg5 and Nd5 to grab the d5 square. Black counters with ...a6, ...b5 and play on the queenside.

Traps and pitfalls
Magnus Smith Trap (White sets it)
White pushes 8.e5, attacking the f6 knight and offering a pawn. When Black takes with 8...dxe5, the queens face each other, and 9.Bxf7+ drags the king away so 10.Qxd8 wins the queen.

How to play against it
As Black, take on d4 right away. Do not play 3...d6, which lets White push d5 and kick the knight. 3...Nxd4 is playable but hands White a central queen and easy development. After Nxd4, decide your setup and stick with it.
