Key ideas for both sides

White

  • 4.d4 is the top engine move: take the center first and win the a3 pawn later with Nxa3.
  • Recapture on a3 with the knight, since it can head to b5 or c4 from there.
  • Put the bishop on d3 and the knight on f3, then castle and use the half-open queenside lines.
  • The a1 rook joins quickly down the open file once the a3 pawn is gone.

Black

  • ...e6 and ...d5 challenge White's center, as in 4.d4 e6 5.Nf3 d5 6.exd5 Qxd5.
  • Keep the extra pawn as a cushion, but develop with ...Nf6 and ...Be7 instead of guarding a3.
  • ...a6 and ...b5 are possible, covering b5 and adding a queenside pawn of your own.
  • ...Bb4+ can annoy White, especially before the white king has castled and the f1 bishop has moved.

Plans and pawn structure

White is down a pawn for a lead in development and open queenside files. After d4, Nf3 and Nxa3, the a- and b-files are open and White's pieces aim at Black's queenside. The engine still prefers Black, and Black's plan is simple: ...e6, ...d5, ...Nf6, castle, and trade pieces to cash in the extra pawn. White wants to keep the center tense, plant a knight on b5 or c4, and double rooks on the open files.

Where the engine's main line heads: White pawn d4, no e-pawns for White, no d-pawn for Black. White has a pawn on d4 and no e-pawn; Black has no d-pawn. White has more central space; Black's pieces are free and the d4 pawn is a target.

How to play against it

As White, play 4.d4 and develop fast. Win back a3 with the knight only when it does not cost a key tempo. Do not spend more pawns: you are already down material, so every move must add piece activity. Keep the king safe before opening more lines.
