Key ideas for both sides
White
- Play Qh5 at once: the threat of Qxf7 mate forces ...Nd6 to block the bishop.
- The simple 5.Qxe5+ wins the pawn back and after ...Qe7 trades queens into a level ending.
- The more forcing try is Bb3 and Nb5, aiming the knight at c7 and d6 to keep the attack going.
- Avoid Bxf7+: after ...Kxf7 and Nxe4 d5, Black gets the bishop pair and a big center.
Black
- After Qh5, play ...Nd6, blocking the c4 bishop and attacking it at the same time.
- If White takes on e5 with check, block with ...Qe7 and accept the queen trade.
- Against the Bb3 and Nb5 lines, ...Nc6 and ...g6 kick the queen, and ...Qe7 guards the c7 and f7 squares.
- Answer Qe2 with ...Nxc3 and ...Qe7, trading queens on e7 and reaching an equal ending.
Plans and pawn structure
In the queen trade line, the position is open and roughly balanced: White develops with Be2 and castles, Black regroups the d6 knight to f5 and develops quickly. In the lines with Bb3 and Nb5, White aims the knight at c7 while the queen pins Black down, and Black may give up the a8 rook for a strong center and development. Both sides must know the moves: one slip leads to mate on f7 or a lost exchange.

Traps and pitfalls
Vienna Game Qxf7 mate (White sets it)
In the Vienna Game, Black takes the e4 pawn and White answers 4.Qh5, hitting f7. If the knight retreats with 4...Nf6, it also attacks the queen but leaves f7 open, and 5.Qxf7# is mate.

How to play against it
As White, Qh5 is the most testing reply. If you want safety, take on e5 with check and trade queens. If you want a fight, learn the Bb3 and Nb5 ideas. Do not give up the bishop with Bxf7+, which hands Black a strong center.
