Key ideas for both sides
White
- Play c4 early, as all three engine lines do, so the d5 pawn is challenged before Black can support it with ...c6.
- e3 and Nf3 control e5 and prepare Ne5, the best outpost in this structure.
- After ...c5 and ...cxd4, recapture with the e3 pawn or a knight to keep central control.
Black
- ...e6, ...c5 and ...Nf6 copy White's plan and strike at d4 before White's own break gains force.
- The e4 square is Black's outpost: ...Ne4 is hard to remove because White's f-pawn has already moved.
- Black's light-squared bishop is hard to develop, so ...Bd7 and ...Bb5 to trade it is a useful idea.
Plans and pawn structure
Both sides have the same holes: e5 for White's pieces and e4 for Black's. The side that plants a knight there first and backs it up usually gets the better middlegame. The c-pawn breaks decide the center: White's c4 against d5, Black's ...c5 against d4. After the trades the c-file often opens, so rooks belong on c1 and c8. Kingside pawn storms are rare, because both f-pawns have advanced and both kings would be exposed.
Where the engine's main line heads: Black Stonewall: pawns d5, e6, f5. Black's Stonewall: pawns on d5, e6 and f5. A knight lands on e4; the e5 square and the dark-squared bishop are the long-term worries.

How to play against it
As White, do not copy Black move for move. Get c4 in first, then e3, Nf3 and Nc3, so your break comes a tempo ahead. Avoid an early e4 lunge: the pawn on e4 is easy for Black to win, and you give up control of e5 for nothing.
