Key ideas for both sides

White

  • Play 4.e5, the engine's top choice, to block the g7 bishop and gain space on the kingside.
  • Support e5 with Bf4 and Nf3, and later push h4 to attack Black's kingside pawns.
  • The alternative 4.h4 aims to soften Black's kingside before castling, then h5 to pry open the h-file.

Black

  • After 4.e5 hit back with ...f6 to break the pawn chain, as in the first engine line.
  • Use ...d4 and ...c5 to gain queenside space and open the long diagonal for the g7 bishop.
  • If White does not push e5, trade with ...dxe4 and develop with ...Bg7 and ...Nf6.
  • Play ...h5 against an early h4, so White's pawn cannot reach h5 and open the h-file.

Plans and pawn structure

The key question is e5. If White pushes, Black's g7 bishop bites on a wall and Black must break with ...f6 or ...c5. White wants to support e5 with Bf4, Nf3 and Qd2, keeping a space edge. If White plays slowly, Black trades on e4 and develops ...Bg7 and ...Nf6 with good pressure on d4. White's alternative 4.h4 attacks on the kingside, and Black should answer with ...h5 or a quick central trade.

How to play against it

As White, play 4.e5 and support it. Do not let Black trade on e4 and develop freely. As Black, break the chain quickly with ...f6 or ...c5, and do not sit passively behind the pawns, or White's kingside space will grow with Bf4, Nf3 and h4.
