Key ideas for both sides
White
- Play Bd3 and Ng5, as in the top engine line, aiming at f7 and e6.
- With the knight still on e4, Qe2 pins the e7 pawn, and ...Ngf6 then allows Nd6 mate.
- The Bc4 setup with Bb3 keeps pressure on f7 and the a2-g8 diagonal.
Black
- Follow with ...Ngf6 and recapture with the knight if White trades on f6.
- Play ...e6, ...Bd6 and ...h6 to drive away a knight on g5.
- Against Bc4, the ...Nb6 move hits the bishop and gains time, as the second engine line shows.
- Later break with ...c5 to hit d4 and open the c-file for a rook on c8.
Plans and pawn structure
Black keeps a healthy structure with c6 and e6 pawns, while White has a central pawn on d4. White plays Bd3, Ng5, N1f3 and Qe2, aiming at the kingside. Black develops with ...Ngf6, ...e6, ...Bd6 and ...h6, then castles. Black's main pawn break is ...c5 to attack d4. Watch the trap: if White plays Qe2 while the knight is still on e4, ...Ngf6 runs into Nd6 mate.
Where the engine's main line heads: White pawn d4, no e-pawns for White, no d-pawn for Black. White has a pawn on d4 and no e-pawn; Black has no d-pawn. White has more central space; Black's pieces are free and the d4 pawn is a target.

How to play against it
As Black, be careful about the e-file. If White plays Qe2 with the knight on e4, do not answer ...Ngf6, because Nd6 is mate. Play ...e6 or meet the knight first. As White, aim for Ng5, Bd3 and Qe2 setups, pressing on e6 and f7, and do not trade pieces too early.
